2012 Youth Summer Camp
Cal Poly Rugby Head Coach David Burnett will be holding a youth Rugby summer camp on Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th June. Held on the Cal Poly University campus in beautiful San Luis Obispo, the camp will open to boys & girls of all sporting skill levels aged between 12 and 18 years of age. Encompassing the skills of both the 15 a side game and 7′s Rugby, this camp is not to be missed if you’re keen on taking your Rugby to the next level
Since Coach Burnett took over at Cal Poly in October 2011, the Mustangs have had a great year both in Rugby 7s and 15s. Cal Poly finished 8th at the inaugural USA Rugby 7s Collegiate National Championships in Texas. In Rugby 15s Cal Poly finished their pre season matches with a historic win against Cal Berkeley, and are currently ranked 12th in the nation as they compete in the Division 1A competition.
Coach Burnett has brought considerable knowledge and experience to the Mustangs from his home of Sydney Australia. Burnett also has particular experience and success at the youth level. In 2010 he was the head coach of the Sydney U16 team that won the Australian National Championship for the first time in the club’s history. This Rugby camp is not just a great opportunity for the kids to get put through their paces by the Cal Poly Rugby coaching staff, its also a great opportunity for Moms and Dads to have a lovely weekend vacation in beautiful San Luis Obispo. San Luis Obispo or SLO was recently named happiest town in American, and has everything a vacation should from Hiking, Biking, Beaches, weekly Farmers Market, Wine Tasting, Shopping and picture perfect weather to top it off.

The camp will begin at 12:30pm on Friday 22nd June. On the first afternoon of the camp, the boys and girls will work through the basic components of the game while Coach Burnett and his staff assess the campers on their skill level. On Saturday morning campers will be split up into small groups based on the skills that have shown the previous day. Campers will work in these groups for the remainder of the camp but group progression can be made as players improve.
The Cal Poly Rugby Youth Summer Camp will focus on all the skills required for both the traditional 15 a side game, as well as Rugby 7s. These include catching, passing, tackling, decision-making, kicking, scrum and lineout technique, rucking and mauling.
There will also be a special emphasis placed on position specific skills, as well as providing players will basic backline and lineout moves they can take back to their clubs and high schools.
